"What a Great Workshop! I learned so much. Today I plan to sit down and make a list of all the groovy new tools and supplies I need ... er ... I mean want. And hair falls! I didn't know. What a revalation. Hoping all this new knowledge kicks the look of Banat el Shamal up a notch. Thank you!" -- Inanna

"Bellatrix - you are a GODDESS!!! I thought I was a makeup
fiend, but no, I bow to your skills, brushes, & magical creams.
I've never attempted the smoky eye look (my 80's Siouxsie goth
eyes don't really count....) can't wait to practice that more!"
-- Sa'diah

"I found the Makeup and Hair Workshop to be very informative and currently use what I learned even in my daily routine. I discovered several critical steps that I was missing and have since corrected those mistakes with very positive results. I look forward to attending another workshop in the future!"

Workshop Descriptions
Makeup 101: What Your Mama Never Told You
Learn everything you always wanted to know about makeup - but your mom never told you and you were too afraid to admit to the MAC lady that you didn't know. We'll start with the order that everything should be applied, then move on to application techniques for everything from blush to bronzers (and which of those you should be using), rounding out the class discussing how you know what colors and techniques will look the best with your face shape and coloring. Covering everything from why using brushes and primer are oft-unknown key elements, to why foundation is often misused (and perhaps is completely unnecessary! Gasp!), this class is packed with vital information whether you've never worn makeup or you started digging into your mom's makeup bag when you were just a little girl.
Bring something to take notes on.
Makeup 102: The Eyes Have It!
Ever wonder what color(s) you should wear on your eyes? Tried time and time again to get the perfect "smoky eye" to no avail? Then this workshop is for you! They say the eyes are the windows to the soul - and that's true in dance as well - which is why we've devoted an entire workshop to them! Your audience connects to you and your dance through your eyes, so make sure that they are as alluring, entrancing, and visible as they can possibly be. We'll discuss how you should apply your makeup based on the shape of your eyes and face, what colors are going to best accentuate your features, and what products will keep your eye makeup from sliding off of your face. Then we'll have a little hands-on practicing the time-honored technique of "Arabic/Smoky eyes."
A $30 Starter Makeup Kit, containing the materials required to achieve the look, is required to be purchased from the instructors. Bring your makeup remover, a small mirror (preferably on a stand) and something to take notes on.
Makeup 201: So You Wanna Be a Performer?
Now that you know how to put on makeup, including which products and colors you should be choosing (since you've just taken the Makeup 101 class, right?), let's translate that knowledge to the stage! Find out why your normal "evening" makeup isn't enough for the stage/performances. Learn the differences between Cabaret, Tribal and Fusion when it comes to performance makeup, including what key elements transcend all genres. Discover theater techniques to help open your eyes, pout your lips and make your facial features pop where you want them to and fade where you don't. Have issues with false eyelashes? Not after this class!
Bring at least one pair of false eyelashes, your makeup remover, a small mirror (preferably on a stand), and something to take notes on. (We advise keeping all receipts for any makeup you buy specifically for this class, as we will be making product recommendations and you may want to return them.)
Hair 301: How to Raq Performance Hairstyles
Let's not forget about hair! This workshop will cover everything you've always wanted to know about ALL performance hairstyles - from fake hair to hair decorations, including how to keep all of that stuff on your head while you're dancing your heart out! And don't be fooled into thinking that "hair" is all about Cabaret.... Fusion, ATS/ITS/Tribal - they all should be expressed all the way to the top of your head! From "Fake Hair 101" to "Diva Tips & Tricks", whether you're a beauty shop newbie or a regular at the hair stores, there's something in this workshop for everyone!
Bring any hair pieces or decorations that you may already have, a small mirror (preferably on a stand) and something to take notes on.
Would you like to host Bella to teach any or all of these workshops in your area or at your festival? Contact me -- I'd love to hear from you!
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR: Bellatrix Ali has been
belly dancing for a little over 6 years in Pavlov’s Hips, one of Kansas
City’s premier belly dance troupes. Before finding belly dance, Bella
was a Lighting Designer for live theatre for over a decade, earning
her Master’s Degree in this field. Her many years of lighting dance
performances (and befriending drag queens) have found their way to
her expansive makeup case; little did she know
that her experience would someday translate to belly dance! After speaking
with many local belly dancers, Bella knew that she could (and should!) share this knowledge with her fellow dancers.
After all, your costume should not stop at your neck!
